Waste to Energy Plant for Sarawak Wastes Management Completion Ceremony

November 27, 2014

A joint venture of JFE Engineering (M) Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned local subsidiary of JFE Engineering Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hisanori Kanou) and Tsukishima Engineering Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned local subsidiary of Tsukishima Kikai Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kazuhiko Yamada) announced the completion of a hazardous waste incineration plant in Sarawak State, Borneo Island, Malaysia.

This plant was ordered by Sarawak Wastes Management Sdn. Bhd., which is a joint venture of the Government of Sarawak State, Malaysia, and Trienekens GmbH, the major waste treatment company in Germany. The kiln stoker furnace adopted in the plant was supplied by Tsukishima Kankyo Engineering Ltd., which is a Tsukishima Kikai Group company specializing in thermal treatment plants. The plant can treat a wide range of wastes, including both liquids and solids. High combustion efficiency and reduced discharges of greenhouse gases are also realized by utilizing the gas collected from an adjoining landfill site as supplementary fuel.

A grand completion ceremony was held on November 27 with a number of distinguished guests in attendance, including the Honorable Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communications of Sarawak State, Datu Haji Len Talif Salleh, Assistant Minister of the Environment of Sarawak, and His Excellency Holger Michael, German Ambassador to Malaysia, among others.

Sarawak Wastes Management is the only waste management agency in Sarawak State. The plant makes it possible to expand incineration treatment of industrial wastes generated by oil refineries, etc., and will also treat medical wastes from hospitals in East Malaysia.

The order for this plant was received based on a high evaluation of the JFE Engineering Group's extensive track record in the construction of urban-type environmental plants and the various thermal treatment technologies of the Tsukishima Kikai Group. In particular, one key point was the creation of localized implementation system, under which every possible effort was made to carry out the project by the local subsidiaries of JFE Engineering and Tsukishima Kikai.

In the future, the JFE Engineering Group and Tsukishima Kikai Group will continue to actively expand their presence in the nations of Southeast Asia, beginning with Malaysia, by supplying state-of-the-art urban-type environmental plant technologies.
